If you haven't noticed by now, to KO someone in Brawl, you must Knock them off the stage boundaries. In Fact, the "How To Play" Video basically explains the best way to get a KO: Use a variety of attacks to build up damage and use a smash attack to send him or her flying.
Some players will argue that just using one type of attack will make for an eaiser KO. However, the game itself encourages you to mix up the moves that you use. And If you use one specific move too much, it looses it's power.
Below are some basic and advanced strategies that apply to all characters and players
DISCLAIMER: On the below strategies, make note that I am not telling you how to play. I am just telling you good strategies that can make players more advanced. If you enjoy going to Final Destination on stamina mode set to 300hp, pick Fox and just blast away, that's fine with me. These are suggestions, not telling you how to play.
Basic Strategies
Know Characters and Stages
Having a better understanding of who you are, who you are fighting against, and where you are fighting can greatly advance your gameplay. For instance, if you know that Captian Falcon can hit you from a distance with his Falcon Kick move, than you'll have an easier time dodging it. Make sure you play around with all the characters and stages to get a feel for all of them. In this case knowing is really half the battle. Smash Attacks
Smash attacks are the cornerstone of the Smash games. All characters have them, and vary to character to character. They all deal a good bit of damage and have consideralbe knockback capabilities.
They all function the same way too. If you push the directional button as far as it can go and push the attack button at the same time, You'll execute a Smash Attack. If you hold the two buttons, your character will flash and charge up a Smash Attack to do additional damage and knockback. Let go of the attack button during the charge to release it earlier. Smash attacks execute in up, down, and the two sides. Some characters can even go off in the diagional directions. the controls also have configurations for easier smashes.
Special Attacks
Special Attacks are what give each character their own individual flavor. In Melee, there were many clones of other characters, meaning that they were basically just one character, but faster, slower, and or stronger. However in Brawl, the designers have done their best to make it that all the characters are unique.
There are four special moves: Special, Side Special, Down Special, and Up Special. Each is different from character to character, so it's hard to explain. There is, however, one common factor. That most character's Up Special move is a recovery move.
The important thing to remember with special moves is to mix it up and not use one move too often.
Recovery Moves
All characters have their Special Up attack as some form of a recovery attack. Most cause damage when you hit an opponent, while some may not. The point of a recovery attack is to get to the ledge of a stage to grab on so you won't get KO'd.
To properly execute a recovery move, wait until you are at the hight of your midair jump. If you use it too soon, you'll be completly helpless. Some characters use directional imput to make the character go where you want to go. For example, If you want to make Pikachu go up, then left, use his Up Special move and then quickly press up and left.
Some also use a complete vertical recovery, such as Ike. While it is possible to move a little horizontaly, make sure you are in line with the ledge as you use the recovery move.
Some characters have what's known as a Teather Recovery. Basically, the character uses the move to make some sort of chain or rope to grab on to the ledge from a distance.
Character that have this are Link, Samus, Zero Suit Samus, Pokemon Trainer (Ivysaur), Lucas, Toon Link, and Olimar.
Projectile Attacks
Projectile Attacks are a staple in Brawl. Some characters have projectiles in their movesets, while others have to rely on items to get a projectile move. Anything that can hit an opponent from a distance, is a projectile attack. Generally speaking, projectile attacks are normally weak, but hardly ever miss. Most execute fast, so you can catch your opponent off guard. Projectile attacks are extremly usefull in any situation, especially in four player Brawls. For more info, refer to the characters section on individual projectiles. (Comming Soon!)
