Now that you've mastered the basics, here are some harder but more rewarding moves
Shielding, Dodging, and Rolling
A huge difference between experts and newbies is that experts have mastered the art of defence. Having defence is equally (if not more) important than having a good offence. Here are the main types of defence.
Shielding
Shields defend against all attacks in the game except for a few attacks and items. Whenever you are stuck in an a combo attack or in a cluster of players, your shield is your best bet. Your Shield will break when you hold it down for too long, or when a move it too powerful to shield against. If that happens, you get the full force of the attack.
You can execute a perfect sheild when you put up your shield right as your opponents attack is about to hit. When this happens you'll hear a little *clink* and your opponent will stop the attack and be open for a counter attack.
Roll
Rolling in probably the most effective type of defence, for two reasons. One, you completly move out ouf the way of your opponent, putting distance between the two of you. Secondly, it lasts the longest regarding invincibility times. To execute, simply hold sheild and move left or right.
Sidestep
The sidestep dodge is when your character moves completly out of the 2-D fighting spectrum. In English that means that you move out of the way. These execute quickly and have low recovery time after using them. They can also be used in succession, making for quick invincible bursts. To sidestep, simply hold shield and press down. Use these often in your defence.
Aerial Dodge
In Super Smash Bros. Melee, once you used an aerial dodge, you were helpless in the air. However, in Brawl, you can use as many as you like. Due to the fact that most if not all aerial attacks need to be close up to execute, you can dodge many attacks in the air with the aerial dodge. Practice timing your aerial dodges, as they can greatly enhance your gameplay. Simply press sheild in the air to do one.
Throwing
Advanced Players focus on defence over offence, and throwing is the best way to stay defencive and offencive at the same time. The best way to throw is to sheild, possibly roll behind your opponent and press the attack button. Also, while you are holding your opponent, you can press the attack button to hit him to cause extra damage. Don't hit him too much, or he'll wriggle free. Once you have him, press a directional button to throw him. At high damage, your opponent will go far. At low, he won't , but he'll be stuned, making for a perfect follow-up attack.
Aerial Attacks
Aerial Attacks have become a huge part of Brawl, especially with the addition of the Smash Ball, which is almost always up in the air. Many aerial attacks are meant to follow up from a previous attack, or to know an opponent up in the air. It's best to know what the aerial attacks are for your character, because they are all different, and do many different things. All of them need to be up close to use them, but make sure that you're not too close, in case an opponent uses one on you. Use them frequently, and whenever possible.
Final Smash Attacks
Final Smashes are one of the coolest new additions to Brawl. However, they can be the difference between a win and loss. So lets start at the beginning.
When a Smash Ball appers, everyone tries to get it. It is almost always in the air. When it is, make sure to use aerial attacks in the direction it is in. Oddly enough, even if you hit it multiple times with one attack (e.g., Pikachu's side Aerial Attack), it only counts as one hit. Also, the more time it's on the stage, the less hits it needs to break it. Once you practice enough, you'll get a feel for when it's going to break.
Once you get it, there's one of two things you can do. The 1st one is to use it right then and there. Some moves, like Fox's or Yoshi's, don't need to be set up, compared to Ike's or Link's. Also, if you use it right when you get it, chances are that there a lot of people around you that also tried to get it. So, if you use it when all those people are in the air with you, chances are you'll hit someone. And even if you miss, your opponents will miss out on it too.
Aside from the immediate tactic, make sure that you plan out and set up your Final Smash Attack, so that you don't waste it. This is vital in one on one matches. One tactic is to keep trying to set up your opponent for an attack. If you keep failing, your opponent will eventually come to you, trying to knock it out of you. Then you can unleash it upon your foe. This stragety only works in one on one however.
It is also better to attack the opponent with the lowest damage, so you can KO them faster.
There are two types of Final Smashes
Type 1 is when you can use it right when you get it. These are either transformations, or outside attacks.
Type 2 is when you have to wait to use it. They either need to be close to an opponent, or in a horizontal line
Combo Attacks
Many players don't realise that standard one two combos are great. Many characters have standard combos and their attack when you just press the attack button. Some you have to press repeatedly, while others you can just hold the attack button. With multi hit users like Kriby or Fox, don't hold it for too long, because your opponent can get out while you're still stuck attacking. However, while you do these combos, you cannot be interrupted, dealing quick and a fair amount of damage.
Items
It is very important to know how to make good use of items. You need a full understanding of how they all work. The best way to do this is to pratcice with them. This is important because WiFi matches with anyone almost always have items. For more info, visit the Items guide (Comming Soon!)
Gliding
This one's just a short little tip. Characters with wings (Meta Knight, Pit, and Charizard) can all glide when you hold down the jump button in a midair jump. I find that if you just hold the button and do nothing to the directions, you get the best range. Be careful, you can't change directions.
Footstool Jump
Also just a little tip, If you press the jump button just as you are about to hit ypur opponent from a fall, you'll jump off their head with pretty good vertical height. You can do this up to three times in a row, until it just dosen't offer much height.
If you do a jump while someone is trying to recover from the bottom of the stage, it sends them downward almost always restulting in a KO. Be careful though, your opponent could attack or use it on you.
Directional Influence
Easy to do and very effective. Directional Influence or DI is when you get hit, you press your directional pad in the opposite direction. It slows down your launch rate, and saves you. This is very useful. You can use DI anytime you are attacked, making it harder for your opponent to KO you.
Edge Guarding

On any aerial stage, you have to knock them off the platform. However with DI, this can be difficult. So experts turn to edge guarding. One method is when you stand near the edge waiting for them to grab on.
You need to attack before they grab the ledge. Once they grab it, they are invincible for a short period of time. Be careful, if you attack them too soon, they have a second chance to use their recovery move.
The second method is a little more complicated, but more effective. Ok, your opponent just used his midair jump and is about to use his recovery move. Here's what you do. Lightly tap the jump button to perform a small jump. With that, jup off the platform and grab the edge. Then right before your opponent hits you, climb back up. You'll be invincible, so you won't get hurt, and your opponent wil miss the ledge, and fall to his doom.
